Duolingo vs Preply: What Actually Works When Learning a Language

I compared Duolingo vs Preply based on my experience.

Everything seemed perfect when I visited an eco-friendly resort just outside Dubai.

Why Arabic?

It all started at Expo 2020 Dubai. 

I stayed a bit longer to explore the UAE, found spectacular spots I never thought existed there, and got inspired to travel more across the region, including Jordan and Oman. 

Beyond landscapes, culinary secrets, and mosques, I discovered a culture with extraordinary hospitality and a beautiful faith.

As well as people I never expected to find. People who would eventually become part of my life.

That inspired me to be fully present and to make every travel experience more meaningful by making real connections.

I enjoyed using Duolingo, but it felt like I had to learn how to actually communicate, not just whether I was saying words and sentences correctly.

The Duolingo Phase

When learning a new language, you can’t skip the basics. Duolingo really helped me with that.

I relied on it for grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

And though gamified learning motivated me, it made lessons feel less challenging over time.

When I made mistakes or missed a lesson, I ran out of hearts or lost streaks. But Duolingo let me earn them back just by waiting or practising.

So even if my dashboard looked great, in my experience, it didn’t mean I was ready for a real conversation.
